Christmas greeting from Queen Mary and the Mary Foundation

20 December 2024

The Queen looks back on the year that has passed at the Mary Foundation. What the foundation has achieved in the past year and what work lies ahead. Read the full speech here.

"All years are special. They contain their own impacts, events and memories. But 2024 in particular will leave a clear mark on my memory.

This year, the Mary Foundation changed its name from the Mary Foundation to the Mary Foundation -H.M. Queen Mary's Foundation. But our work continued unchanged, and we are still fighting for the same purpose through our three areas of focus: bullying & well-being, loneliness and violence in the family.

At the Mary Foundation, we always strive for more knowledge, effective efforts and new ways to make a difference for those who are outside the community.

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who works with us to ensure that more people have a place in the community and experience belonging. It is precisely in partnerships and collaboration that we use each other best and can make the biggest difference for all those who deserve it.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a hopeful New Year!"

- Queen Mary

I guess photographer Emil Bagger captured this years photo of Mary when she hosted a Christmas reception for the Mary Foundation's partner on December 5th. The beautiful custom-made Birgit Hallstein dress was a perfect choice. Stylish, elegant and Christmas red.

Love that she accessorized the dress with ruby red earrings from Queen Ingrid's Ruby Parure and the ring custom-made by Dulong Fine Jewelry's talented craftsmen to match the parure. And of course the fine diamond-studded butterfly brooch. The Mary Foundation's logo.

A word about hope

19. December 2024

"Christmas is often associated with hope." This is how the Mary Foundation first write in their Christmas greeting.

"Holidays like Christmas are an obvious opportunity to lift your glance, look around and think about your meaningful relationships. It's about both appreciating the relationships that are important to you and being aware of the relationships where you are something for others. Because maybe you are the very person who makes someone else feel safe and valued enough to be themselves.

Christmas at Frederik VIII's Palace

18. December 2024

Christmas is getting closer day by day. The royal family are celebrating Christmas at Marselisborg this year but their home at Frederik VIII's Palace at Amalienborg has also been decorated beautifully. The court shared a few photos of the couple's home.

Visit at WeShelter's food club

17. December 2024

Since 1893 WeShelter has worked to provide better conditions for the homeless and socially disadvantaged in Denmark. Queen Mary became patron of WeShelter in May of 2024.

WeShelter's social food club that offers a meeting place for those who are having a hard time in life. A place to gather and not be alone. The food club is part of the social psychiatric center NABO Center Amager.

On December 17th the Queen visited WeShelter's food club who meet once a week. She met with both the volunteers and participants. They really seemed to have a great time! The participants gladly talked to the Queen about being part of the food club and how it has helped them.

The weather in Denmark is really cold, windy and rainy these days, so I truly get it why Mary had chosen her wool-blend ARMA coat and knitted Max Mara vest. Everything to keep warm in this horrible weather. She style the fine vest with grey JOSEPH trousers and what looks like a black button-down. Hard to tell which one.

Mary kept the outfit simple. She only wore a few accessories - a couple of diamond earrings and a beloved Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen diamond ring. The earrings goes way back but have never been identified. Maybe they are custom-made?

She matched the trousers with grey suede ankle boots. With what I see, I think they could be new. We also get a glimpse of her grey leather bag from Tod's in the car at her arrival.

Christmas concert with DR Girls' Choir

15. December 2024

Queen Mary has been patron for DR Girls' Choir since 2018. In May of this year, the court announced that she will continue her work with the choir until 2029.

On December 15th the Queen arrived at DR's Concert Hall in Copenhagen to attend the choir's Christmas concert

The choir's concert honored Danish Christmas hymns like "Det kimer nu til julefest" and "Mit hjerte altid vanker".

I want a green suit right away! Who's with me? Mary looked wonderful in her new suit from Alberta Ferretti. What a color. It's been ages since Mary has worn anything from Ferretti. Even her brand new satin blouse is a Ferretti design. Love how she matched both suit and blouse in color. Really clever.

Beautifully she embraced the style of her green outfit with emerald and diamond earrings purchased at an Bruun Rasmussen auction. Even her Annikat ring matches. What is not to like? Usually I am not a bag fan of bright colors and black but somehow she managed to make it work. The black Naledi Copenhagen clutch and patent leather pumps from Gianvito Rossi completed her look with such elegance.

Visit at 'Kræftværket'

11 December 2024

It has become a tradition for the Queen to pay a visit at 'Kræftværket' at Rigshospitalet.

Kræftværket is a "safe place" for young people with cancer between the age of 15 and 29. There are room for a relaxed atmosphere and a chat with others in the same situation. Kræftværket celebrate their 10th anniversary in January 2025.

Queen Mary visited Kræftværket on Wednesday evening to a cup of glögg and æbleskiver - a traditional Danish pastry.

The young patients gladly welcomed the Queen and enjoyed a smalltalk about their story, plans for Christmas and hopes for the future.

I really like Mary's comfy and casual look when visiting 'Kræftværket'. The brand new brown jacket from Arma and the black turtleneck are a great match. Especially, with the wide-legged trousers. I would really like to hear your thoughts about this new jacket. Haven't really decided yet.

Once again, Mary wore a beautiful necklace. Still like the idea that it is either inherited or from an auction. What do you think of her fine necklace? I hope to get a close up. The elegant golden earrings are from Dulong Fine Jewelry.

Another thing: did you notice her straight hair? I absolutely love it!

Meeting with DRC Danish Red Cross

11 December 2024

Today, Queen Mary hosted a meeting with the General Secretary of DRC Danish Red Cross, Charlotte Slente. The Queen is patron of DRC Danish Red Cross and has been for almost two decades.

The General Secretary met with Queen Mary at Frederik VIII's Palace at Amalienborg to a conversation about the organisation's global activities and a status of the situation of the world's refugees.

I am impressed how amazing Mary managed to looks so elegant in simple black trousers, a black turtleneck and her stunning red Alexander McQueen. She first wore the blazer back in 2021. Since then, she has worn it a quite a few different occasions. Like at an online meeting with the High Level Comission in 2021 and when celebrating UNIFEC's 60th anniversary in 2022.

Mary accessorized her beautiful outfit with golden earrings from Dulong Fine Jewelry and a brand new necklace. Like the idea that she inherited it or that it could be an auction. What do you think? Guess she could be wearing black pumps or boots.

Day 3.

State visit from The Arab Republic of Egypt

08. December 2024

President of The Arab Republic of Egypt Abdel Fattah Al Sisi was invited by the King and Queen to visit Denmark. He arrived on Friday 6th and have spend three days in Copenhagen.

King Frederik and Queen Mary greeted the President at Christian VII's Palace at Amalienborg where he (as tradition prescribes) singed his very own window which is to be placed in one of the royal castles.

The President is now on his way to Norway.

This is why we adore Mary's style! Who else shows up in a bright blue suit like this? Mary does. I am truly impressed and thrilled to see her wear the Fold London suit again. I love a splash of color and this is simply a magnificent shade of blue. Really like that she matched it with a simple black turtleneck and black suede pumps.

We get a glimpse of her beloved Sophie Bille Brahe diamond earrings. I stopped counting at 10 of how many times she has worn these earrings. I spotted a golden ring as well but I am not able to tell which one it is or if it is new because the lack of photos.

Day 2.

State visit from The Arab Republic of Egypt

07. December 2024

President of The Arab Republic of Egypt Abdel Fattah Al Sisi arrived in Copenhagen yesterday to attend a state visit in Denmark.

On Saturday, the President first met with Chairman of the Danish Parliament Søren Gade. The meeting took place at Folketinget at Christiansborg. Members of the Parliament got the opportunity to met the President during his visit at Folketinget.

Later on, Prime Minister Mette Frederiks met with the President at Marienborg for a meeting and for lunch.

In the evening, the Egyptian President hosted a return event at Sølyst in Klampenborg. King Frederik and Queen Mary attended as guest of honor. Princess Marie and Princess Benedikte also attended the event.

Tomorrow, the King and Queen will officially say goodby to the President and greet him for his visit.

I am thrilled to see that purple velvet Temperley London suit again! Loved if more than everything when she first wore it in an exclusive interview with Financial Times in 2022. It was an interview with the Australian magazine on occasion of her 50th birthday. Photographer Hasse Nielsen captured some wonderful photos of her. At the return event, Mary embraced the style with a simple black satin n-neck blouse.

Mary matched the stunning suit with golden diamond earrings from Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen featuring elegant design pendants. Among others, she wore them at an event in Nuuk earlier this year. The huge butterfly brooch was first worn in an interview with The Australian Women's Weekly in 2022.

She perfected the outfit with a magnificent purple satin box clutch from Prada and chic studded Gianvito Rossi pumps.

Day 1.

State visit from The Arab Republic of Egypt

06 December 2024

Official welcoming

By invitation, the President of The Arab Republic of Egypt Abdel Fattah Al Sisi is visiting Denmark from December 6-7th.

President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi was officially welcomed at Amalienborg Square by King Frederik and Queen Mary followed by a honorary visit at Kastellet. They were driven back to Christians VII's Palace at Amalienborg by carriage.

The President of The Arab Republic of Egypt then visited Eigtveds Pakhouse to attend in a series tête-à-têtes with selected Danish business leaders. He was welcomed by Foreign Minister Lars Løkke rasmussen - former Prime Minister.

King Frederik joined the President at Eigtveds Pakhouse to launch a Danish-Egyptian trade forum with the participation of Danish and Egyptian companies and decision-makers

What an outfit Mary wore at the welcoming ceremony of President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi! The combination of dark green and light grey are splendid. Love how she matched her resused The Fold London coat with a grey midi skirt and white embellished blouse. Mary first wore the beautiful green coat at a church service for Ukraine in February 2023. Pretty sure the blouse is new and that the skirt is old, but I can't tell for sure which one it is. Any ideas?

She embraced the style with an elegant felt hairpiece from Susanne Juul. She was worn it in, among others, 2014 and in 2017. Her white pearl earrings are rather new creation from Dulong Fine Jewelry. The diamond brooch is a gift from her father-in-law Prince Henrik. It belonged to his mother.

I am so sure her clutch is new. Looks like a grey snakeskin clutch. The chic light grey suede pumps are from Gianvito Rossi.

Banquet at Christiansborg

In the evening, King Frederik and Queen Mary hosted a banquet at Christiansborg Castle in honor of President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi's official state visit in Denmark.

A number of representatives from the Danish Government, the Egyptian delegation, the danish court and representatives from Danish and Egyptian businesses were invited to attend the banquet.

Princess Marie and Princess Benedikte also attended the dinner.

The world is impressed about Mary's evening outfit! I get it. She looked stunning in that embellished black dress! She first wore it back in 2017 when celebrating Finland's 100 years of independence. We have never been able to identify the dress and it seems like it will remain unidentified.

Mary styled the wonderful dress with her "new" tiara. The rose-cut diamond bandeau is recreated to be worn as tiara as well. Originally, it is a part of a rose-cut diamond set. She paired it with similar diamond earrings purchased at a Bruun Rasmussen auction. A closer look revealed her wearing Princess Caroline's Ivy brooch, which can also be worn as a bracelet.

The fine clutch is a reuse just like the patent leather pumps from Gianvito Rossi.

Christmas reception with the Mary Foundation

05 December 2024

Every year, Queen Mary host a Christmas reception for the Mary Foundation and their partners. Her way of saying "Thank you for a succesful year. We look forward to another year of collaboration with you".

The reception took place at Frederik VIII's Palace at Amalienborg.

I rarely comment on photos but this time I have to. Emil Bagger captured the most incredible photos at the Christmas reception. I feel the atmosphere. I like was there.

I always look forward to see what Mary is wearing at the annual Christmas reception for the Mary Foundation's partners. This year, she had chosen her stunning bright tailored Birgit Hallstein dress. A very simple dress with many incredible details. The elegant neckline, balloon sleeves and high slit.

At the Christmas reception, Mary accessorized the look with ruby earrings from Queen Ingrid's Ruby Parure and a diamond studded butterfly brooch - the Mary Foundation's logo. Love that she chose soft curls for the event.

The rose-cut diamond set

03 December 2024

For almost 100 years, the rose-cut diamond set have lived a quit life on display underneath Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen. The Danish crown jewels are exhibited at Rosenborg for the public to see them.

The rose-cut diamond set goes back to the 1840s and was last worn by Queen Lovisa. She was the wife of King Frederik VIII. The Court Jeweller has written an article about its history. They also show a photo of the full parure.

In collaboration with Kongernes Samling (the Royal Collection), the Queen has decided to bring back the diamond set. The biggest diamonds from the necklace are now able to be worn as a tiara! The tiaras construction makes it a 'bandeau'. The new frame is created by goldsmith Matias Hasbo Dinesen in collaboration with Queen Mary and Kongernes Samling.

The royal court allowed us a glimpse of the process transforming the diamond set into a tiara with photos and a video interview with Director of Kongernes Samling Thomas C. Thulstrup. The interview is clearly recorded at Frederik VIII's palace at Amalienborg - the royal family's main residence.

All natural, Mary looked beautiful in a simple dark blue knitted turtleneck and likely black trousers. She paired her outfit with brand new glasses from Tom Ford and a black satin scrunchie. I am still to identify that.

Remember to follow my royal Christmas calendar.

An oak tree in Fælledparken

02 December 2024

The proclamation in January, was today made memorable when the Queen planted an oak tree in Fælledparken along with Mayor of Copenhagen Lars Weiss.

The initiative is by the city council of Hobart, who wanted to honor their beloved Mary. In Hobart is planted a 'blue gum' - a eucalyptus tree. It is the official Australian symbol of the state of Tasmania.

What a lovely gesture!

The wind is getting colder in Denmark. It makes sense that Mary was dressed in a warm Burberry coat, long trousers and what looks like a white knitted turtleneck. She matched the outfit with a beautiful reused beanie, brown leather gloves and boots.

The boots are quite interesting. To me, it looks like chocolate-brown suede wedges boots. Reminds me of a similar pair of boots but I need more photos to tell were they are from.

What is our "go-to" outfit during the winter season?

CHRISTMAS CALENDAR 2024

join me and take a step inside the home of a king and queen

01. December

On December 1st 2022, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine made a Christmas decoration to their grandmother Queen Margrethe. The sweet moment was captured on video and shared as part of the royal family's Christmas calendar. Prince Vincent enjoyed a cookie served on a "Star Fluted Platter Christmas" from Royal Copenhagen.

02. December

When Queen Mary hosted a meeting with Maya and Rükiye the Mary Foundation's Youth Panel on November 26th 2024, she served them a cup of coffee or tea in "Hammershøj Cups" from Royal Copenhagen.

03. December

Weekly, the Queen meet with the Mary Foundation's board to make an update, talk about results and forthcoming events, etc. At the meeting, they enjoyed coffee from a "Bernadotte Thermo Jug" from Georg Jensen and tea from a "Thermo Jug" from Alfi.

04. December

On April 15th 2024, Queen Mary hosted a meeting with Ukraine's First Lady Olena Volodymyrivna Zelenska at Frederiks VIII's Palace at Amalienborg. The First Lady was welcomed in the assembly room. Here the King and Queen welcomed their guests. "Easy Chair, PK22" by Poul Kjærholm decorated the room.

05. December

Whenever, Queen Mary host a more private meeting with board members of the Mary Foundation or met with representatives of larger corporations, these "Pindsvin glass jug" are on the table. Often in two different colors: dusty pink and sheer glass.

06. December

The King and Queen have a large collection of books. Many of them are exhibited all around the house at Frederik VIII's Palace at Amalienborg. One of them is "Ego" by Murakami.

07. December

Many books are on display in their home at Frederik VIII's Palace. A variety of books about art, music, animals and fashion. Among others "Northern Women in Chanel" by Peter Farago & Ingela Klementz Farago is part of the Queen's collection.

08. December

During the pandemic, we were not able to go anywhere without hitting hand sanitizer. The royal couple used "Clean Hands" from NATHALIE. Both of them had it in arms lengths in their offices.

09. December

Quite a few times, we have seen a glimpse of Queen Mary's office but we rarely see photos from King Frederik's office. In 2020, the court shared a few snapshots from when the King (Crown Prince at that time) participated an online meeting. It also revealed an "i-SIT" chair designed by Mogens Olesen.

10. December

The couple are indeed fond of books. They have many on display at their home at Frederik VIII's Palace at Amalienborg. One of the is "The Queen's People" by Edward William Fitzalan-Howard. Maybe a gift?

11. December

In 2004, the renovation of Frederik VIII's Palace started and in 2010 the royal couple moved in. The worked along with a number of Danish artists who decorated each their room with colorful paintings. One of the decoration is by artist Kasper Bonnén.

12. December

With all the rooms in their home at Frederik VIII's takes quite a lot of furniture. I already revealed a couple of other furnitures - chairs. The couple also decorated a room with a "STAY"couch from GUBI. Simple. Elegant. Chic.

13. December

Many times over the years, the royal couple have been spotted in the streets of Copenhagen on their bikes. One of their bikes are a "MK1-E bicycle" from Butchers and Bicycles. A cleaver choice when having four children and be living in a city like Copenhagen.

14. December

The couple are surrounded by many books. Quite a lot of them are on display. Books about artists, royalty, designers and this one "Pearls" written by Hubert Bari & David Lam. Hubert Bari has written a number of other books about pearls and diamonds.

15. December

Since 2018, Queen Mary has been patron of DR Girls Choir. For 10 years, Philip Faber has been conductor of the choir when he went looking for a new job. Over the years, he has met with the Queen on a number of occasions. In her office, is a copy of Philip Faber's book "Den Danske Sang". Maybe it was a gift?

16. December

It is well-known that Queen Mary's favorite color is purple. It clearly shows in her office. Her custom-made "Oxford" chair from Arne Jacobsen has been in her office for years. Such as the two iconic  "Svanen" chairs also from Arne Jacobsen. Often she also enjoys purple orchids on her desk.

17. December

Several artists were requested to decorate each their room at Frederik VIII's Palace, when it was renovated back in 2004. Artist Erik A. Frandsen was honored with the task to decorate Queen Mary's office with a painting.

18. December

I always admired the combination of new and old when it comes to how they decorated their home at Amalienborg. Personal, yet with a touch of a royal heritage. One piece of interior they seem to like, are these "Graphic Pattern Pillow " from Dedar.

19. December

Usually coffee, the and water are served when Queen Mary and King Frederik are hosting a meeting. Now and then, they serve coffew in "Chambord Coffee Pots" from Bodum.

20. December

Christmas is just around the corner and it is time to decorate the Christmas tree. The royal family always got a magnificent tree which is beautifully decorate with colorful Christmas ornaments and lots of candles. The golden "candle holders" are from Georg Jensen.

21. December

"Belgian painter Luc Tuymans, one of the key figures in the 1990s revival of figurative painting, is also one of contemporary art’s great history painters, tackling historical traumas and their representations in a restrained―though resolutely painterly―style and pale, muted palette." (Amazon). Luc Tuymans' book "Intolerance" is part of the royal couple's personal collection of books.
